STORIES FROM THE COMBRAILLES

France – 2016

In the heart of France – sitting astride three counties: the Allier, the Creuse and the Puy-de-Dôme – lies a forgotten territory called the Combrailles. A former mining region, the golden age is now far behind.

Monika Marton, a 58 year-old woman of Polish origin, settled there 15 years ago. There, she breeds a flock of ewes and calves and refuses the meccanization of agriculture. She underwent hip surgery at the beginning of 2016, an operation that she had been postponing for years because of her work. Despite this, she continues to work during the lambing season.

Local boy, Michel Message, gave part of his land to a goatherd who was foreign to the area. Part of his flock was slaughtered and Michel’s barn was burnt down. Resigned, he took his land back and the goatherd moved to the region of Nantes. Eight years later, the conflict is still not resolved. Since then, Michel had always refused to yield to those who he saw as being at the origin of the conflict: his neighbors. Land is still coveted as a golden ticket to winning grant aid from Europe. At sixty-three years of age, he finally gave up fighting a few months ago.

Solitary and isolated, bound to their land, Michel and Monica live only a few miles apart and yet, they have never met.
This story tries to relate the relationship that people have to their land, through two figures, one who settled there, the other who was born there and never left it. And yet, they both wonder in the same way about their attachment to a given place. Do we belong to a given territory? To the extent that we discover that it is no longer possible to leave?

CRÓNICAS DE COMBRAILLE

Francia – 2016 –
