- THE NIGHT OF THE HOMELESS - October 20, 2017

This post is also available in: French

It is 10:30 in the morning, and I hear an item on Radio Classique Montréal about the Night of the Homeless that was happening that very evening.I contacted the organizers to get some more details about the event. 17:30, and I’m off to wander through the streets of Montréal, between Phillips Square and Cabot Square. A walk that lasted 1h50, with veteran bikers bringing up the rear, finishing at Cabot Square where there was music, workshops, a beehive with honey tasting, circus acts, hotdogs, refreshments, braceros and so on.
We all have a role to play, but which?

The 28th Night of the Homeless in Montreal. The story of the night. Initially launched with the title Night of the Homeless Youth by a group of Auberges du Coeur shelters in 1989, this event of solidarity lasted for a full night, in the autumn cold in Montreal. It was aimed at bringing the plight of many people, mainly young, suffering from precarious employment, earnings and participation in society, to the attention of the population of Quebec. In 1997 the Auberges du Cœur decided to hold the event simultaneously in their local communities in order to reach as many people as possible, throughout Quebec.

It was in 2001 that the Night of the Homeless Youth became simply Night of the Homeless in order to render the event even more inclusive. Since then, every year, the community organizes vigils across Quebec, very often with the help of the local population.

So since 1989 everyone takes to the streets to protest about the poverty affecting the young and not so young. The event is designed to be a moment to get together and reflect upon the harsh reality facing those who have been homeless or who risk to become so.

It is also a time to try to understand the different factors which lead to people finding themselves out on the street. For me it was the occasion to meet the Voften ghostly forgotten people in our society, like one Inuit woman, no longer in the streets, who all the while telling me her story, pulled a small shoe out of her bag. She had kept it carefully since the death of her young son.
