ALLER, RETOUR (GO, RETURN)

BIENNIAL MEETING OF PHOTOGRAPHERS FROM THE CONTEMPORARY ARAB WORLD

This post is also available in: French

Since 2014, Lynn S.K. has regularly returned to the places of her childhood in Algeria and has told, through her approach as photographer, a personal experience related to her dual culture: born in Algeria in 1986, refugee in France with her parents because of terrorism shedding blood in her country in the 1990s. Her photography is linked to an identity quest and a kind of autofiction.

From her back and forth, three series are born, which are now exhibited at the City Hall of the 4th arrondissement, including one never shown before: ”Rue Belouizdad” designates a working-class district of Algiers where the photographer meets two of her aunts and focuses on a few moments of their daily lives. ”Jenima” is a small village in the region of Jijel: Lynn S.K. stays on a farm which is owned by her relatives and was constantly threatened during the civil war. ”I, YOU, THEY” is a series where the photographer is on a stage and plays several roles characterizing the destiny of Algerian women who all are very different.

This journey into the intimacy of the artist’s world offers at the same time a look at today’s Algeria, the status of women, childhood, family, but is also the expression of feeling of exile and of the need to return to origins.
