Two cities and in two different countries.  Fez, in Morocco and Bamako, in Mali.  Both in Africa, where the same job, tanning – the process of making leather, is seen from Raymond Dakoua’s perspective, as a photographer from the Ivory Coast who now lives in Belgium.  A study of the two cities, from the north of the Sahara to the south, a much poorer area.  These male and female labourers, whose work is associated with stench and decay, with acidic products and extreme hard work, are automatically confined to the bottom of the social ladder; much lower down that those who work with leather making bags or slippers or the merchants who sell these objects to tourists.

 

 

Deux villes, deux pays. Fez au Maroc, Bamako au Mali. Deux fois l’Afrique, deux fois ce même métier séculaire, la tannerie, vue au travers l’objectif d’un seul homme, Raymond Dakoua, photographe ivoirien établi en Belgique. Fez et Bamako, de 2005 à 2009, du Nord du Sahara au Sud, beaucoup plus pauvre. Les tanneurs donc, femmes et hommes qui font ce travail irrémédiablement associé à la puanteur, à la pourriture, aux produits acides et au labeur ; des êtres assurés d’office d’avoir une place au bas de l’échelle sociale, bien plus bas que celle occupée par les artisans qui travaillent le cuir pour en faire des babouches ou des sacs, ou par les commerçants qui les vendent par après, si possible aux touristes. Mais même là-bas, tout au fond, il existe des mondes de différence.
