With the fall of the Iron Curtain and the following liberalization of cross border traveling in the region, Hungary suddenly became an important transit country for refugees and human trafficking to Western Europe. The setting up of the borderfree Schengen area in 1995 including Austria even added to these problems which had been unknown to Hungary until 1989. Martin Fejer as the Collectif-Est/ostphoto member stationed in Budapest is following the development in refugee matters.
