Old Age Brought to Light
My identity as a photographer was built under the influence of a humanist and social photography movement. Twenty five years ago life coincidences brought me to come through the doors of a retirement home and I tarried there. Since then, I’ve entered those places, one after the other, since far from making me feel like running away, old age strikes me and calls images to my imagination. I am fascinated by old age and the institutional places it occupies as together they form profoundly human communities where emotions are at their highest peaks. My pictures are reflections of what those so unique places inspire to me once my eye has been cast on the beings and the relationships that link them to the last places of their existences. I am not looking for perfect smooth and silky white skin, slender legs and rounded calves or round breasts. My gaze comes to rest when all of these have disappeared; when the years have stripped human beings of their artifices; when they have brought them to the edge of their limitations. I look for and I encounter the beauty of old age, the real person who hides behind the scars left by the passing of time. I capture the sparkle in the eyes, the radiance of an emotion, the tale of an entire life. Where others would see only ugliness and tragedy, I see beauty.
