This photo comes from the book “La raison du plus faible”, (published by Delpire.) Many people suffering from mental handicaps must live in specialised institutions. They cannot be integrated into society in a usual way, not able to work and be self-sufficient. Nowadays, their life expectancy has increased. A lot of handicapped people outlive their families therefore are alone and have no one. The 2005 law requires institutions for the mentally handicapped to house this ageing population. Faugeras is a good example, a place welcoming the handicapped whatever their age, the first organisation in France of its type. This is why I immersed myself in life there for an entire year.
