Overshadowed by some and suppressed by others, the history of the Harkis is not widely known. I wanted to investigate, from one generation to the next, from one individual to another, the sense of identity within this community. I listened to people, visited different places, and immersed myself in this complex and delicate story, recording it as plainly as possible. This work results in two series: 1. Portraits of individuals from varying backgrounds, with captions to accompany their faces, extracts from interviews. These evoke the lives and feelings of these people united through history. 2. Views of places where have lived and passed through since their arrival in France. Far from a unique historical situation, this work invites reflection on our own relationship to the past, memory and identity.
