Harald Hauswald, born 1954 in Radebeul, is one of the most important photographers in the GDR and a founding member of the OSTKREUZ agency. After an apprenticeship as a photographer, Hauswald moved to East Berlin in 1977 and became a member of the Verband Bildender Künstler der DDR (VBK). He was the first East German photographer to publish photo reports in West German magazines such as GEO, the ZEITmagazin or the taz. His work has been shown in more than 250 solo exhibitions in Germany, the USA, France, Italy and the Netherlands and has been published in numerous publications about East Berlin. With his unique work, Harald Hauswald is not only one of the best-known and most respected German photographers, but he has also created German history himself. In 1997 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, in 2006 he received the “Einheitspreis – Bürgerpreis zur Deutschen Einheit”. Hauswald lives and works in Berlin.
