SHENGEN

Ruth STOLTENBERG

Schengen is a Luxembourg winegrowing village bordering on Germany and France. In 1985, here in the heart of Europe, the first agreement to abolish internal European border controls was signed. Today, at the time of the refugee crisis, this agreement is literally reaching its limits. Ruth Stoltenberg grew up in the tri-border region and deals with the effects of the opening of the border on the culture and everyday life of the people living there. Do houses and front gardens make national identities visible? Or does this region, characterized by viticulture and agriculture, have their very own, transnational charm?
“Ruth Stoltenberg goes far beyond the interpretation of her self-portrayed theme – she creates her own narrative, the European picture novella from the easily accessible tri-border region.”
