Their names are Tamar, Yaron or Gal. They are students, farmers, postal workers or former officers. They live in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem and are 20, 40 or 60 years old. Between 2007 and 2017, Martin Barzilai, through his numerous trips, has met about 50 Israelis called “Refuzniks” who refuse, for political or moral reasons, to serve a society militarized by the far right where the military service is a constituent of the Israeli citizenship.
These Refuzniks relate the entire history of Israel, its liabilities and contradictions, and its plural aspect. They describe a society where everything must be readjusted to build a less dark future.
