Les femmes photographes ont conquis leur légitimité dans une pratique artistique, alors dominée par les hommes, grâce à des stratégies d’émancipation et de subversion. Pourtant leur production n’a pas toujours été reconnue ; parfois inconsidérée, d’autres fois réduite à la question du genre. Cet ouvrage propose de retracer l’évolution des travaux des femmes photographes et leur participation aux bouleversements socio-culturels des XIXe et XXe siècles tout en interrogeant les raisons de leur faible visibilité dans l’histoire de l’art.Women photographers conquered their legitimacy in an artistic field then dominated by men owing to strategies of empowerment and subversion. Yet, their production was not always recognised; sometimes ill-considered, other times reduced to the “gender/genre” issue. This publication offers to retrace the evolution of the works of women photographers and their participation in the social and cultural changes of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries, while questioning the reasons for their poor visibility in the History of Art.
