From July 27 to August 3, 1996, the mountainous region of Chiapas, in the southeast of Mexico, hosted the Intercontinental Gathering for Humanity and Against neo-liberalism, organized by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation under the leadership of the Subcommander Marcos. This meeting brought together 5,000 activists from around the world and 42 national delegations. It gave rise to the so-called Declaration of La Realidad, announcing the creation of a non-hierarchical network of international resistance to liberalism, endowed with a communication network consisting of activists to counter the discourse of the dominant media. Photographer Bruno Serralongue went there to witness a newly emerging form of activism. The full version of this long-unpublished project is now published as an opportunity to explore the place held by artists in these alternative movements without any real or asserted hierarchy.
