By coincidence, photography was born at a time when people’s lives were defined by the social groups to which they belonged : whatever their age (from childhood to old age), the circumstances (from ceremonies to voyages), or the daily activities (from work to leisure time).

Almost as soon as it was invented, photography became a means of categorising a group, giving it a permanent identity, whether the group itself was a long-standing entity or merely an ad-hoc gathering. Photography also provided a durable image of the relationships between individuals, from the most superficial to the most profound.
Billions of group photographs exist, yet there are hardly any anthologies on the subject. Do we ever look at the photos where we appear with our friends and family?

This book uses photo-cards (a much-overlooked art form) to explore the importance and the esthetic and documentary value of group photographs…not to mention the occasional moments of humour that they contain.
