João PINA

This post is also available in: French

46750 of João Pina addresses the gang violence in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) as well as the transformation of the city during the last 10 years.
In 2016 when the world’s eyes are on the Olympic Games, homicides increase by 20%, robberies by 40%. 46750 is the portrait of Rio de Janeiro of these last 10 years: a reverse of the ”wonderful city” full of contrasts and complexity. João Pina plunges into the gang wars in the favelas and comes back with uncompromising images.
At the end of the book we learn that 46750 is the number of homicides occurred in the urban zone of Rio de Janeiro, meaning an average of 13 homicides per day from 2007 to 2016.
The book is punctuated by the committed poems of Viviane Salles, inserted between the photographs on coloured paper notebooks.
