Black Elk, the medicine man of the Oglal Lakota tribe (1863-1950) predicted that a black snake would burn its way across the land, ravaging the soil and water, killing all living things. He went on to predict that the seventh generation would rise up and stop the black snake.

At the end of March 2016, construction of a 2000km pipeline began in Morton County. The inhabitants of Bismarck, the capital of North Dakota, refused to have it passing as originally planned to the north of the town, for fear of pollution of their drinking water. The route of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) was thus modified and now runs one mile to the north of the Standing Rock Amerindian reservation, on land whose management by the Lakota tribe was guaranteed by the Fort Laramie treaties of 1851 and 1868.

Black Elk, un curandero de la Banda Oglala Lakota (1863-1950), profetizó que una serpiente negra atravesaría ardiendo el territorio, devastando el agua y la tierra y matando a todos los seres vivientes. También anunció que la séptima generación se revelaría y detendría a dicha serpiente.
A finales de marzo de 2016 comienza en el condado de Morton, la construcción de un oleoducto de casi 2000 km de largo que originalmente debía pasar al norte de la ciudad de Bismarck, pero los residentes de la capital del estado de Dakota del Norte se negaron a ver pasar el oleoducto cerca, por temor a que contamine su napa de agua potable. Es así como el trazado del Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) fue corregido y pasa a 1½ km al norte de la Reserva Indígena de Standing Rock, en tierras garantizadas a las tribus Lakota, por los tratados de Fort Laramie de 1851 y 1868.
El 14 de agosto de 2016 la juventud de Lakota, que encarna la séptima generación, lanza un llamado a la resistencia. A ellos se unen primero las otras seis tribus que constituyen la Gran Nación sioux y luego el mundo entero.
