Right in the heart of a medical desert, Doctor Tréhou is one of a species that is heading for extinction. He has to stretch himself to serve the needs of a scattered and poor population, where the old still speak the local dialect and some can neither read nor write. Doctor Tréhou shares his time between his main surgery in Guise, consultations at his secondary surgery in Marly-Gomont and consultations at patients’ homes within a radius of 30km. He has also set up a local accident and emergency service which he runs with his colleagues from the surgery in Guise.
Apart from medical care, the doctor helps to fight against loneliness by maintaining social contact. Picardy is a region with many isolated inhabitants spread through its leafy pastoral landscape, dotted here and there with red-brick houses and the spires of fortified churches that served to protect the population. Even today, everyone living in the countryside has a rifle for hunting muskrat.
In the village of Guise, where the Godin family once established a “familistère” or social cooperative community for the wellbeing, health and education of their labourers, Doctor Tréhou pushes open the door of a red-brick house with a neighbouring farmyard and a stable. On the wall he is greeted by a trophy bearing the following motto, written on a porcelain plate: “Don’t take your doctor’s advice, but do as he does and drink good wine!”

En medio de una zona desertada por los médicos, el Dr. Tréhou, es realmente una especie en peligro de extinción, que debería poder multiplicarse para poder satisfacer las necesidades de una población dispersa y desfavorecida, donde los más ancianos hablan todavía el dialecto regional y algunos no saben ni siquiera leer ni escribir.
El Dr. Tréhou divide su tiempo entre un consultorio principal en la localidad de Guise, otro secundario en Marly Gomont y las visitas a domicilio en un radio de 30 kilómetros. Ha creado también una sucursal del Servicio de Ayuda Médica Urgente (SAMU) donde asegura una permanencia junto a sus
colegas del consultorio de Guise.
Además de las consultas, el médico crea lazos sociales para luchar contra el aislamiento y la soledad de las personas. La Picardía es una región francesa muy típica del norte de Francia, con un paisaje verde salpicado de casas en ladrillo rojo y erizado de iglesias fortificadas construidas para proteger a la población. Aún hoy en día, en la región Picarda, cada familia tiene su rifle para cazar las ratas almizcleras. En Guise, donde se encuentra la Familistère (cooperativa industrial) creada por la familia Godin para el bienestar, la salud y la educación de sus trabajadores, el Dr. Tréhou atraviesa el umbral de una casa en ladrillo rojo que abre sobre una granja con un establo. Allí es recibido por un trofeo y sobre él un plato de porcelana en el que puede leerse: ¡No hagas caso a tu médico, como él bebe un buen vino!”
