In our free society, the elderly people – weakened and isolated – are probably the only “category” which has been imposed what they should do and not do, where and how to live.
“For their good”, “in their interest.”
These words used as locks allow us to put them – without their consent – under protection, in specialized institutions, to treat them as irresponsible persons and impose -unnecessarily- prohibited restrictions, deprivation and humiliation. These are true violations of individual liberties.
Everything must be done to enable the elderly people to make choices that are well thought, and made revocable.
“This must be the collective goal to be achieved and the motivation for any player in the field of gerontology”, says Michel Charles, head of the CLIC. The example of this Center shows that this is possible.Jean-Louis Courtinat is a photographer since 1981. He was Robert Doisneau’s assistant at the Rapho Agency during twelve years.
Concerned photographer, Jean-Louis Courtinat has made long-term reports on those excluded from society. He has worked on poverty, health problems (disability, elderly, end of life …).
