The Instant Gallery is honoured to present for the first time in exhibition in Paris, the work of Jean-Pierre Laffont, a notorious figure in the press business.
As a young beginner in photogrpahy in Paris, Jean-Pierre Laffont moved to New York in 1965. He quickly became the U.S correspondant for Gamma agency, and created Gamma US as well as the Sygma Photo News agency, with his wife Eliane.
His presence in the United States made him a priviledged witness of historic events in a period where the country went through significant changes: The youth’s protest against the Vietnam war, the civil rights mouvements led by Martin Luther King, the protests for the defense of women and gay rights, but also the violence of popular neighborhoods in New York, the changes of the city in constant turmoil, or his encounters with numorous personalities such as Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, Alfred Hitchcock, but also french celebrities in New York, delighted to be photographed by a fellow french countrymen whether it was Brigitte Bardot, Françoise Hardy or Charles Aznavour…
His personnal and caring gaze brings out the best of his work and offers an oppurtuniny to discover this surprising country, with its unique energy and an implicit violence which never cease to fascinate and inspire people worldwide.
