TRANS ANATOLIA

This post is also available in: French

For five years, Mathias Depardon has been taking photos of Turkey, deep in the Caucasus. His work tackles urban zones recently settled in the west of Istanbul, in the turkish Kurdistan where civil revolution has settled and where a true water war is taking place: he questions the notions of periphery and border. These remote locations help us understand the major mutations shaking the territory.
Through portraits and landscapes, Mathias Depardon depicts a country torned between an globalisation, progressing at all costs, and the reminiscence of ottaman values. These adventures are beyond a simple documentary. In fact, the photographer always chooses to create a light dispcrepency in his work. He takes the time to observe and focuses on ordinary scenes to offer a different lecture of the territory. Constantly immersive, his work prompts us to focus on what can be found beyond the photographs. He invokes the real as much as the imaginary. The life scenes he captures reveal a complexed country, with humanity and veracity.
