TERRES D'EXIL

This post is also available in: French

From the sixteenth century to the eighteenth century, Romani were the servants of the high nobility, masters of military and divinatory arts, horse experts and were also court musicians. In the nineteenth century, the tables turned. Mystery paved the way for suspicion, fascination and mistrust: material decline, popular fear and the harassment of constables, soon relieved by an exclusion act, made them “Romanichels”. […] Nowadays, the situation of the Romani remains problematic. They are the first transnational minority in Europe, consisting in more than ten thousand people. In Western Europe, they face integration issues, while in Eastern Europe, the Romani suffer from an increasingly more violent segregation.
