POWER(S): DOMINATION, COMMITMENT, SEDUCTION

The Marseilles Photographic Center presents Pouvoir(s) (”Power(s)”), an exhibition exploring the ideas of power, counter-power, minority, majority, seduction, dissidence, ”collaboration”, marginality or avant-garde, in all the areas of photographic and imaginal representation.

Major artworks of the collections have been selected and correspond with pieces of emerging artists. From the figures by Patrick Faigenbaum, Valérie Belin and Pierre Gonnord to the experiments by Sammy Baloji, Barbara Kruger or Stéphanie Solinas and the ”stolen moments” of Alain Bizos, Pierre Boulat, Jean-Pierre Charbonnier and Paul Fusco, the exhibition demonstrates the icons of power as much as their anonymous victims.

Whether they act through direct representation, reinterpretation or open criticism, the featured artists use their images to denounce, disarm or raise awareness.

Each work is considered as a stage of a journey explaining the multiple facets of cases of the exercise of various types of power. The aesthetic power of an artwork can also serve to demonstrate. The final question of the proposition is the real power of art, the real power of artists.

All the artworks exhibited belong to the photography collection of the Centre national des arts plastiques.
