EYES WIDE OPEN

This post is also available in: French

“I met Edith Thoueille. She is a nursery nurse and in charge of the Nursing mother and infant protection, situated in the 14th district in Paris. For 15 years now, she has been working with visually handicapped women who wish to have children. Meeting her had a decisive influence on me: I saw and took pictures of Edith guiding a blind mother and her baby for the first time… and then I saw her doing so with other mothers and other children.
I tried to imagine what it is like to be blind. I closed my eyes in an innocent way I was trying to experience their lives, to see what they don’t, but it did not work. When I lived with them, I realized that they could see what I did not and vice versa.

Delphine Warin first studied Russian and theater. In 1988, she entered the Center for Media Art in the Centre Américain where she followed a course in photography. She then left for New York to study at the International Center of photography. When she comes back in Paris, she takes an interest in making portraits. She takes pictures of anonymous persons, of personalities and of couples. She tries to understand how they connect with each other. She wants to reveal their intimacy.
