THE LAST DANCE: AT THE HEART OF THE STAMBALI RITUAL

This post is also available in: French

Riadh is one of the last Arifas of Tusnisia, and introduced to the stambali, a cult of possession, which takes its source in sub-saharian Africa and spread in all Maghreb and the roads of slavery between the 8th and 19th centuries. A mix between the ancestors of the Haoussa culture (NIger), and the popular cult of the muslim saints, the stambali has become a tradition of contemporary Tunisia. However, Stambali is now potentially close to disappear.
In fact, most of the officiant have passed, and the ritual, both a cult and a patrimony, struggles to find its place in a deeply evolving society. Riadh invites us in the intimacy of this universe, intertwined with music, dances, smells and colors, before starting his last dance.
