Le Palazzo Grassi présente Henri Cartier-Bresson : Le Grand Jeu, réalisée en co-organisation avec la Bibliothèque nationale de France et en collaboration avec la Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Ce projet, imaginé et coordonné par Matthieu Humery, met en perspective les regards de cinq commissaires invités sur l’oeuvre de Cartier-Bresson (1908 – 2004), et en particulier sur la « Master Collection», une sélection faite par l’artiste au début des années 1970 à la demande de ses amis et collectionneurs Jean et Dominique de Menil, des 385 images qu’il considérait comme les plus significatives de son oeuvre. Il existe aujourd’hui cinq exemplaires de ce set exceptionnel.

La photographe Annie Leibovitz, le cinéaste Wim Wenders, l’écrivain Javier Cercas, la conservatrice générale et directrice du département des Estampes et de la Photographie de la Bibliothèque nationale de France Sylvie Aubenas et le collectionneur François Pinault ont ainsi été invités à choisir respectivement une cinquantaine d’images parmi cette « Master Collection».

À travers son choix, chacun partage sa vision personnelle de la photographie et de l’oeuvre de cet artiste majeur. Renouveler et enrichir notre regard sur l’oeuvre d’Henri Cartier-Bresson à travers celui de cinq personnalités, tel est l’enjeu de ce projet singulier.

L’exposition « Henri Cartier-Bresson. Le Grand Jeu » sera présentée à la Bibliothèque nationale de France, à Paris, au printemps 2021.

Based on a project conceived and coordinated by Matthieu Humery, the exhibition looks at how the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908 – 2004) is viewed by five different curators, focusing particularly on the ‘Master Collection’, a selection of 385 images that the artist himself chose in the early 1970s, upon the request of his friends and collectors Jean and Dominique de Menil, as the most significant of his work. Today there are five copies of this extraordinary set.

Photographer Annie Leibovitz, film director Wim Wenders, writer Javier Cercas, the General Conservator and Director of the Prints and Photography Department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Sylvie Aubenas, and collector François Pinault have been invited to select fifty works each from the original ‘Master Collection’.

Through their selection, each curator shares his or her vision of this major artist’s photography and work. The scope of this unique project is thus to renew and enrich our view on Henri Cartier-Bresson’s work through the respective ones of five personalities.

The exhibition ‘Henri Cartier-Bresson. Le Grand Jeu’ will be presented at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, in Paris, in spring 2021.
