Bettina Rheims photographic exhibition finds its core in a monument bearing a strong custodial past. The Vincennes Castle, a prison state since the fifteenth century, received female political convicts until 1784. After the French revolution, it became a custodial site receiving women living in the wrong. “I had to encounter these women that did not make the choice to live within these walls. We talked a lot. They shared their stories, and I tried to offer them a moment outside of this context”. Bettina Rheims (November 2016).
