The DRC is affected for some years by an increasing number of sexual violence cases. The phenomenon was widely relayed by the media. However, contrary to the image conveyed, the phenomenon of sexual violence is not always connected to the existence of an armed conflict. The authors of this violence are, for the great majority, civilians. The international community, itself influenced, has so far confined its activities to the Eastern regions of the country, mainly in the Kivu provinces and in Ituri. The war in the DRC is over in large parts of the country, but thousands of women and young girls remain targets for sexual violence Most of the sex crimes remain unpunished. Moreover, the victims have to face the disapproving glances of society. For fear of being rejected and stigmatized by their own community, many of them do not dare to speak out.
