THE BROTHERS

This post is also available in: French

The Brothers are the privileged encounter of Marcel Imsand with the Vionnet twins of Vaulruz: Louis, known as East and West, and Emile, known as Milet. The Musée Gruérien presents the 47 original prints of this exceptional series, a tribute to the photographer born in Pringy who died on November 11, 2017 at the age of 88.
In 1985, Marcel Imsand meets two timeless beings, two characters on the margins of society, two eccentric nonagenarians living in Vaulruz in the canton of Fribourg: the Vionnet twins, Louis, known as the East and the West, and Emile, as Milet. Some shots are taken. For seven years, they built a relationship. It ends with the death of one of the protagonists.
The exhibition presents the 47 original prints of this masterpiece of humanist photography. These images unveil, in an intense and modest way, the chiaroscuro daily life of two beings at the end of their journey, their moments of pleasure and their worries. Two destinies linked to one another that end up making them one.
The reportage “The Brothers” was exhibited at the European House of Photography (Paris), the Gianadda Foundation (Martigny) and the Musée Gruérien. The prints were donated to the Museum by the author. The Marcel Imsand collection is kept at the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne.
