The Sabarimala pilgrimage is reserved for men only, with the exeption of young nubile girls and menopaused women. Having vowed total chastity and renouncement to other earthly pleasures for 80 days, they climb the mountain to reach Lord Ayyappa’s temple and give their donations. Some walk for 80 to 100 km with their belongings on top of their heads and reach the temple in a high state of exhaustion. Through donations, this temple is one of the richest in India, but this pilgrimage has many critics among ecological groups in India. The temple site is located in a national park and the millions of pilgrims have little concern for the environement.
