Selon une étude menée en 2005, on estime à environ 1000 nouveaux cas par an de fistules obstétricales au Burundi, soit 3 cas de fistules pour 1000 accouchements. En Kirundi, fistule ce dit: Ingara Yo Mukigo – “la maladie de l’arrière cour”.
According to a study mentioned by the National Program for Reproductive Health and the United Nations Population Fund in 2005, an estimated 1000 new cases of obstetric fistula are reported annually in Burundi, averaging three instances for every 1000 births in this African nation. In Kirundi, fistula is called « Ingara Yo Mukigo, » or « the backyard disease. »
