In Thailand, the population of water buffalos fell by 40% in 10 years. This is due to the massive arrival of the tractor, which produces in one day in the rice fields the work that a plow buffalo does in twenty days. Consequently, these animals have virtually disappeared from the villages to the great despair of the authorities who are experimenting with various initiatives to encourage farmers to use them more. Despite this, the peasants prefer to sell them to slaughterhouses. It is estimated that 90% of the meatballs consumed in Thailand are made with water buffalo meat. In the marshes of Talé Noi, breeders try to save from the slaughter the last wild buffalos.
