For over 5 centuries, men and women living in the desert of Thar in Rajasthan, India, have been willing to give their lives to protect wild animals and trees with which they live in total symbiosis until considering them as members of their family. Recognized as the first world ecologists, the Bishnois -29 in Hindi – follow the 29 rules established by their guru, Jambheswhar, following an apocalyptic vision in 1485, of Man despising environment was digging his own grave. Many individuals, from various casts, have adhered to this spiritual movement. Today over 600 000 Bishnois are fighting to preserve nature and wildlife in the desert of Thar.
