Evénement rare dans l’histoire de notre Galerie, au printemps 2021, FAIT & CAUSE exposera les gravures et dessins de l’artiste syrien, Najah Albukai. Cette exception dans notre vocation dédié à la photographie sociale se justifie à la fois par la convergence du sujet et par l’extraordinaire qualité de son travail.

Najah Albukai (50 ans) appartient en effet à cette petite famille des artistes qui, ayant eu le malheur de connaitre l’horreur des camps et des prisons, ont su tirer de leur expérience atroce ce qu’il faut bien appeler des chefs d’œuvres.
Professeur de dessin dans une université à Damas, il n’était ni jihadiste ni membre de la rébellion lorsqu’il a été dénoncé en 2012 pour avoir participé à des manifestations et emprisonné pendant un an.

Ses dessins sont un témoignage bouleversant de ce qu’il a vu et vécu : les coups, les tortures, les humiliations…
Ils font inévitablement penser à ceux ressurgis sous le crayon de Zoran Music plus d’un quart de siècle après qu’il ait été victime et témoin des atrocités de Dachau.
La mémoire photographique de Najah Albukai, a tout enregistré et sa main obsédée reproduit ce dont l’œil ne cesse et ne cessera pas de souffrir.

La sidération que nous avons éprouvée lorsque nous avons découvert ses dessins en août 2018, dans un numéro de Libération, a provoqué la volonté de faire connaitre son œuvre.
Elle sera exposée à la Galerie FAIT & CAUSE et éditée. Nous avons réalisé – avec les Editions Actes Sud – le projet d’un livre, qui paraîtra en même temps que l’exposition.
Les dessins de Najah Albukai seront accompagnés de textes que nous avons demandés d’écrire à des auteurs – en résonnance avec l’émotion suscitée par leur violence – sur les injustices et les tragédies de notre époque.

Tous Témoins réunit des textes d’une vingtaine d’écrivains français et étrangers : Philippe Claudel, Dominique Eddé, Laurent Gaudé, Jérôme Godeau, Nancy Huston, Farouk Mardam-Bey, Wajdi Mouawad, Olivier Py…

A cette occasion, nous coéditons – avec les Editions ACTES SUD –
un livre consacré à ses œuvres accompagné de textes écrits autour de ces sidérants dessins de prison (Abdulrab Sarori Habib, Alba Rico Santiago, Marijosé, Alie, Djaïli Amadou Amal, Sinan Antoon, Mohamed Berrada, Jacques A Bertrand, Philippe Claudel, Marie Desplechin, Thimothée, De Fombelle, Dominique Eddé, Alaa El Aswany, Laurent Gaudé, Jérôme Godeau, Nancy Huston, Hala Kodmani, Souad Labizze, Farouk Mardam-Bey, Wajdi Mouawad, James Noël Olivier Py, Alan Riding,
Sebastiao Salgado, Elias Sanbar, et Samar Yazbek).

Nous organisons également le 20 Mars à 19h, à la Maison de la poésie,
à Paris, une soirée au cours de laquelle Nancy Huston, Laurent Gaudé, Philippe Claudel, Jérôme Godeau, et Wajdi Mouawad liront leurs textes en une soirée mise en scène par Wajdi Mouawad, entourés par les musiques de Dominique Mahut (percussions), Nancy Huston (Piano), Najah Albukai (Oud et guitare) avec la participation exceptionnelle de Bernard Lavilliers : Et si l’espoir revenait …

Committing the unspeakable to paper. Giving form to the unbearable. Najah Albukai’s art stands proud. The confrontation leaves you breathless. The merest word, the briefest of comments sticks in your throat. What can you say? What do you say to a man who has lived on intimate terms with dead bodies? You cannot believe what your eyes are seeing. In a flash, the scalpel of the drawings lacerates your eyelids. Impossible to turn away from the offering that these sheets represent, as you contemplate them, one by one, with shock and amazement. How can you not be affected by these images? We were dazed. Dumbfounded. We wanted to understand.

There is an irresistible, dark night in the depths of man that overflows time. The unending tenebrous night of hate, of all of History’s mass graves and concentration camps. At their own risk, a rare few artists – often the greatest ones – have immerged themselves in the vision of that black matter which seems to reflect continuously off Najah Albukai. It flows in the bloody ink of his drawings. Printed on the bare and bruised flesh of the wounded soul, it finds an exact correlation in the dark grooves of an engraving, in that art where one scores, incises, and files the copper plate to reveal the imprint of death at work. An obscene pack of torturers who beat, punch and hit out blindly. Stripped naked. Humiliated. Martyred. Piles of body parts identified with markers after the slaughter. Where are we? In the prisons of Damascus in the year 2014….in « Centre 227 ». In the basement of the house of the dead, haunted by gaunt shadows, by rickety ghosts laid out on blankets stiff with dried pus, by the bodies of fellow inmates – those who did not survive the « interrogation ».

The sheet of drawing paper opens up another world. Line by line, Najah Albukai works to reproduce what Bachar el-Assad’s henchmen and militias sought to disfigure. This sketch, so easy to erase, that delicate engraving, so easy to tear up, capture your full attention with the sharply focused vision of the apocalypse that they convey. The artist is truly the one who pulls the curtain aside, who “uncovers”, in the literal sense of the Greek word apokaluptein, the tragedy of mankind. He brandishes the humble recording power of the pen against the beastliness of chaos and of a warped world. No detail escapes his keen eye, whether it be the pain endured or the fury of the torturer. The Syrian artist finds the very expression of his art as a hunted man, imprisoned and soon to be executed by his fellow men. And thus he exhibits the true face of humanity derided, of human misery brought forth like a revelation. What a terrible revelation. The onus is on us to merit it.
