Nailya Alexander Gallery présente Pentti Sammallahti: Summertime, en ligne du lundi 3 août au vendredi 28 août 2020. Cette exposition comprend des images de plus de quarante ans de carrière de l’artiste, des années 1970 à nos jours, et célèbre la lumière, la chaleur et la liberté de l’été.

Né en 1950 à Helsinki, Pentti Sammallahti est aujourd’hui une figure incontournable de la photographie scandinave, réputée dans le monde entier pour ses images émotionnelles d’animaux et de la nature et pour ses tirages argentiques magistralement réalisés. Son travail exprime la beauté et l’émerveillement du monde à travers ses voyages lointains à travers la Sibérie, le Japon, l’Inde, le Népal, la Turquie, l’Afrique, les îles britanniques et l’Europe de l’Est et de l’Ouest, ainsi que dans sa Finlande natale.

Pentti Sammallahti: Summertime embrasse le célèbre esprit péripatéticien du photographe en incluant des images de presque tous les continents qui capturent l’atmosphère unique de la saison. Comme toujours, l’œil vif de Sammallahti pour la personnalité des oiseaux et des animaux et pour la lumière distinctive de chaque lieu est pleinement exposé. La liberté et la spontanéité de la saison sont illustrées par des photographies de volées d’oiseaux volant au-dessus de la mer de Marmara en Turquie, ou descendant en masse d’un arbre à Delhi; tandis que des images d’enfants dans un hamac dans une forêt finlandaise faiblement éclairée et de chiens étalés sur un escalier ensoleillé au Népal parlent du rythme languissant et tranquille de l’été. L’attention de Sammallahti aux synchronicités dans la nature sauvage apparente du monde se reflète dans ses compositions soignées: les réflexions et les reflets abondent dans son travail, communiquant non seulement un sentiment de jeu du monde, mais aussi un sentiment d’harmonie et de paix.

Le travail de Sammallahti a été présenté dans des expositions individuelles et collectives depuis les années 1970; cette année, il a fait l’objet de l’exposition personnelle Distant Land: Pentti Sammallahti à Fotografiska à Stockholm. Depuis 1979, il a publié plus de treize livres et portfolios et a reçu des prix dont le prix Samuli Paulaharju de la Société de littérature finlandaise, les prix d’État pour la photographie, le prix d’art de la province d’Uusimaa, le prix Daniel Nyblin et le prix annuel de l’Association des critiques finlandais. En 2004, le célèbre photographe Henri Cartier-Bresson a classé Sammallahti parmi ses 100 photographes préférés pour l’exposition inaugurale de sa Fondation à Paris.

Nailya Alexander Gallery is pleased to present Pentti Sammallahti: Summertime, on view online Monday 3 August – Friday 28 August 2020. This exhibition includes images from over forty years of the artist’s career, from the 1970s to the present, and celebrates the light, warmth, and freedom of summer.

Born in 1950 in Helsinki, Pentti Sammallahti stands today as a landmark figure in Scandinavian photography, renowned worldwide for his emotive images of animals and nature and for his masterfully crafted gelatin silver prints. His work expresses the beauty and wonder of the world through his far-flung travels across Siberia, Japan, India, Nepal, Turkey, Africa, the British Isles, and both Eastern and Western Europe, as well as in his native Finland.

Pentti Sammallahti: Summertime embraces the photographer’s famously peripatetic spirit by including images from almost every continent that capture the unique atmosphere of season. As always, Sammallahti’s keen eye for the personalities of birds and animals and for the distinctive light of each locale is on full display. The freedom and spontaneity of the season is depicted in photographs of flocks of birds wheeling above the Sea of Marmara in Turkey, or alighting en masse from a tree in Delhi; while images of children in a hammock in a softly lit Finnish forest and of dogs sprawled across a sunny staircase in Nepal speak to summer’s languid, unhurried pace. Sammallahti’s attention to the synchronicities in the seeming wildness of the world is reflected in his careful compositions: reflections and mirroring abound in his work, communicating not just a sense of the playfulness of the world but also a feeling of harmony and peace.

Sammallahti’s work has been shown in both solo and group exhibitions since the 1970s; this year, he was the subject of the solo exhibition Distant Land: Pentti Sammallahti at Fotografiska in Stockholm. Since 1979, he has published more than thirteen books and portfolios and has received awards including the Samuli Paulaharju Prize of the Finnish Literature Society, State Prizes for Photography, Uusimaa Province Art Prize, Daniel Nyblin Prize, and the Finnish Critics Association Annual. In 2004, the renowned photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson ranked Sammallahti among his 100 favorite photographers for his Foundation’s inaugural exhibition in Paris.

Sammallahti’s work can be found in the collections of the J.
