Au centre du vaste continent africain, il existe une constellation de misères. Insalubres, isolés et souvent illégaux, les cachots des prisons du Burundi n’ont pas éveillé l’attention de la plupart des associations des droits de l’homme du pays.
Des enfants de dix ans croupissent dans ces “donjons” fétides, plongés dans la pénombre, certains pour des années, pour la plupart sans avoir jamais vu l’intérieur d’un tribunal.
La constitution du Burundi fait état de 14 jours d’emprisonnement au maximum. La réalité est un cuisant échec de la justice. Arrêtés pour des infractions innombrables, accusés de sorcellerie, de meurtres – ou dans le cas de Eli-Davide, 10 ans, à Cibitoke, pour avoir regardé un inconnu voler des DVD – les malchanceux passent des mains de la police à celles des caïds de la prison : “si un nouveau ne peut pas payer la taxe du cachot, il doit passer une semaine sans s’asseoir, sans manger, il doit vivre dans le coin où l’on chie la nuit”.
Sans documentation ou représentation, devant ce simulacre de justice, ces enfants se trouvent entièrement démunis. Laura Gabrielle Dix   THE DUNGEON
 In the middle of the vast African continent, there is a constellation of misfortunes. Unhealthy, isolated and often illegal, the dungeons of prisons in Burundi have not attracted the attention of most of the of human rights  associations in the country.
Ten years old children languishing in the fetid "dungeons", plunged into darkness, most of them without ever having seen the inside of a law court.
The constitution of Burundi establishes 14 days of imprisonment. Reality is a bitter failure of justice. Arrested for several offenses, accused of witchcraft  and murder – or in the case of Eli, Davide, 10 years, Cibitoke, for having watched man stealing DVDs – the unluckies pass from the hands of the police to those of the lords of the prison: "If a new prisoner can not pay the fee of the dungeon, he must spend a week without sitting, nor eating, and  must live in the corner where the others shit during the night.
In front of this travesty of justice without documentation or representation, these children are totally powerless. Laura Gabrielle Dix
