The sudden political turn in East-Germany at the end of the 80s, not only resulted in the sudden disappearance of a whole government but also in the general collapse of the socialist economy. Not only did it lead to the breakdown of whole industries and a wide-ranging shutdown of agricultural enterprises, but it left no space whatsoever for an economic re-orientation. The generation that would have been able to achieve this, was non-existent and the so-called lost generation – young people between the age of 16 and 25 – were left behind without perspective and without orientation but with the choices of either staying or leaving, both daunting in their nature.
