In 2014 I went to Ethiopia twice and produced a report about an urban renewal project conducted by the Bauhaus University of Weimar and the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EiABC) based in Addis Ababa. It highlighted the issues and solutions of an exponential need for affordable and sustainable housing, in the context of one of the fastest growing economies in the world combined with an extremely fast urbanization due to rural population transfers and dysfunctional traditional public policies. This report got released in the form of four articles in the independent newspaper Ethiopian Reporter (The Reporter) as well as an exhibition at the Goethe-Institut in Addis Ababa in December 2014 during an international symposium organized by both universities and attended by the major public and private stakeholders in Ethiopian urban planning.
