SPIRITUALITÉS D'ÉTHIOPIE

This post is also available in: French

Ethiopia is the land of all spiritualities. They emerge in rock-hewn churches, during major Christian religious festivals, during the pilgrimage around the tomb of a Muslim saint, among the Rastafarians who found their Promised Land in this country and even among members of the Awra Amba community who refuse mosques and churches because God, they say, is first within the hearts of men.

On the stone paths of this vast country, the pilgrim is on the move, often barefoot, for days and sometimes weeks, their only horizon being a holy place, sometimes as modest as a cave or a pond. Upon arrival, the fervor, the songs, the crowd, immerses him into a mystical emotion, often close to ecstasy.

Photojournalist Jean-Christophe Huet has been regularly visiting Ethiopia for more than 10 years. His images draw on this deep faith to try to pierce the sacred and the sublime, the inexplicable and the invisible.
