RADICAL DEVOTION

This post is also available in: French

For several years, Laura Henno has been visiting Slab City, this camp lost in a military district of California’s desert, to meet again those who have become real characters of a forgotten world. Without resources and any rudimentary equipment, living on their slab, these concrete soles remained of barracks, these pioneers without future offer all their humanity to the filmmaker and photographer. While the military training breaks silence, concording to the hot sun, the slabbers are a population not interested in social rules. Their destiny is played out above the law. Pastor Dave yells a preach in the desert wind and a young evangelist creates a vegetable garden, a veteran of Iraq still believes in love… Laura Henno creates the images of this conspiracy of adversity where survival and need of eternity are combined. Responding to the great tradition of American documentary photography, the one of Dorothea Lange (1895-1966) in the same regions of the world during the Depression of the 1930’s, the artist uses the photographic chamber to gather the breath of this last people.
