Même s’ils étaient, en un sens, les héritiers du réalisme humaniste d’une génération antérieure, ces six photographes adoptèrent une approche qui s’en détachait par de nombreux aspects : ils fuirent les lieux communs néo-réalistes et cherchèrent à atteindre une totale honnêteté ; ils voulurent observer et traduire le monde directement, mettant parfois en scène leurs photos pour créer des images surréalistes ultra-expressives ; ils étaient très conscients d’enregistrer une manière de vivre et des traditions qui étaient sur le point de disparaître ou de subir des changements radicaux, et qui mettaient en lumière le gouffre entre la société urbaine et son pendant rural.Though heirs, in a sense, to the Humanist realism of an earlier generation, the approach adopted by the six photographers was different in a number of ways: they shunned Neo-realist commonplaces and aimed for total honesty; they sought to observe and convey the world directly, sometimes framing shots in order to create immensely-expressive Surrealist images; they were aware that the language of photography has its own characteristics and resources; they were acutely conscious that they were recording ways of life and traditions which were soon to disappear or undergo radical change, and which highlighted the gulf between urban and rural society.
