MÉMOIRES DE GLACES

From the warmth of the African dunes to the sparkling transparency of Greenland ice, Philippe Alexandre Chevallier offers us the vital message of a fragile and ephemeral beauty immortalized through his photography. Beyond reality, the vision of Alex has a much broader, multi-faceted reach:

Aesthetic: his vision offers us the intense beauty of this frosty immensity, wavering in the rhythm of variations of lights.
Intellectual: his vision makes us understand that this sparkling paradise, rich in natural resources, is a source of greed and an object of geopolitical conflicts.
Human: his benevolent gaze observes and shares the dreams, the needs and the challenges of the local populations.
Emotional: his eye dazzled by the immeasurability of this virgin nature, also observes its fragile temporality.

Today, 22% of the world’s oil and natural gas reserves, as well as a profusion of minerals and rare clays, are estimated to be located in the Arctic. Global warming would facilitate drilling, open new routes for commercial fleets, destroy the villages built on permafrost, endanger hunting traditions and subsequently the access to food. Preserving the Arctic is not only protecting one of the most beautiful regions in the world by helping locals keep their right to live and work on their ancestral lands. It is also protecting our own way of life, our comfort, … maybe even one day, it will be our survival or that of our children. The melting of Greenland’s ice sheet would lead to a 7 meters increase of sea level!!!

The intensity of the moment captured by the images of Philippe Alexandre Chevallier reminds us that the indifferency is no longer an option.”
