I WAS HERE, I SAW HERE

VAGAMONDES FESTIVAL'S

This post is also available in: French

The 6 photographers invited as part of the Vagamondes festival’s program are from Mali, Senegal, Mozambique and Ivory Coast. Some of them, like Omar Victor Diop, are accomplished in line with precursors such as Malick Sidibé or Seydou Keïta summoning, at the same time, the history of Western art and seeking to capture the diversity of societies and lifestyles of modern Africa. Others, like François-Xavier Gbré, in touch with time and the geography of the territories they are crisscrossing – from colonial vestiges to landscapes redefined by current events -, are summoning the language of architecture as a witness to memory and social changes. Whatever their influences – documentary, conceptual, architectural photo, portrait or self-portrait in the studio, fashion and hip-hop – all the works are traversed by the problem of an elusive identity, questioning the place of Africans in World History. Often oriented on current topics, particularly on the migration from Africa to Europe, their photographs are a try to carry out a reinvented narration of black people history, starting with the history of humanity and the one of the concept of freedom.
