CASHMERE: AN ENDLESS WAR

Since India and Pakistan gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir has been at the center of the conflict between the two countries. Each of these two neighboring and rival nuclear powers administers one part of Kashmir while claiming all of its territory.

In 1989, dozens of militant groups launched a bloody insurgency against the Indian administration. The Kashmiri separatists have been for a long time calling for independence or for the attachment of the region to Pakistan.

In these recent years, the Indian-controlled party has seen new attacks by insurgents and numerous protests against Indian authority. New Delhi accuses Pakistan of arming and training separatists, which is denied by Pakistan. Most Kashmiris support the cause of insurgency and participate in rallies against the Indian presence.

This year, the human toll has risen to more than 400 victims, which makes it the heaviest one in ten years. During the last uprising which was violently repressed by the Indian army, nearly 70,000 people lost their lives.
